(Skokie)—Audience members are invited to become a part of The Wizard of Oz in the first ever Dress-A-Like and Sing-A-Long theater presentation by the Jewish Community Center (JCC) Young Actors Ensemble (YAE), Sunday, November 16 at 12:00pm, at the Elaine & Zollie Frank Theatre at the Mayer Kaplan JCC in Skokie.

The JCC Young Actors Ensemble will present six performances of The Wizard of Oz this November. One of the six performances will be a “Family Funday.” On Sunday, November 16, during the noon performance, audience members will be given a song lyric book and encouraged to sing along with the performers during the show. Audience members are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Wizard of Oz character, and there will be a costume contest held during intermission, with awards given to the most creative costume.

“Knowing that audience members are very familiar with the story and will likely be humming the songs in their heads, we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to join in the fun by singing along. While audience members have likely seen the film and even the stage version before, it’s unlikely that they have been part of it as they will be during our special performance, “ said Director of Performing Arts, Terri Hilton.

48 children, ranging in age from 8-16 years old, from eight Chicagoland cities, have been working on and off stage for eight weeks preparing this musical extravaganza.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the film version of The Wizard of Oz. The Young Actors Ensemble production of The Wizard of Oz is an adaptation of the 1939 film, commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1987.

About the JCC’s Young Actors Ensemble

The JCC's Young Actors Ensemble is a youth performance group that performs 3-4 plays and musicals per year.

The Young Actors Ensemble and the JCC Theater department are unique from so many other children’s theaters because of the steps taken to accommodate observant Jewish children. Committed to include the entire Jewish community, the troupe never rehearses or performs on Shabbat or religious holidays.

Grandparents of Interfaith Grandchildren Receive Education and Support E-mail

What:
Grandparents Circle, a free support group for grandparents of interfaith grandchildren.

When:
Tuesday, November 11, 7:30pm
5 subsequent sessions

Where:
4500 Dempster St., in Skokie, IL

Who:
Grandparents of interfaith grandchildren

Sponsored by:
Cosponsored by Ezra-Habonim, the Niles Township Jewish Congregation, in partnership with Jewish Community Center of Chicago.

Grandparents Circle is a FREE, outreach and education program for Jewish grandparents who are struggling with how to pass on Jewish traditions to grandchildren who are growing up in interfaith homes.

The first of six sessions will be Tuesday Nov. 11, at 7:30 pm. The six sessions will be held at 4500 Dempster St., in Skokie, IL. Subsequent sessions will also be free.

Jewish grandparents want to pass on their Jewish identity and background and share their history with their grandchildren. Grandparents learn skills and techniques to nurture, and in some cases help establish, their interfaith grandchildren's Jewish identities through the program. The program also provides participants with a supportive and open-minded environment to share their achievements, express their frustrations, and acknowledge their challenges.

The Grandparents Circle program was originally piloted in 2007 in the Los Angeles area. A Jewish grandmother initiated the course, which is based on a curriculum designed by the New York-based Jewish Outreach Institute (JOI), and inspired by the book Twenty Things for Grandparents of Interfaith Grandchildren to Do, by JOI’s Rabbi Kerry Olitzky and Paul Golin. The book offers many recommendations on how grandparents can nurture the Jewish identity of their grandchildren.

Jewish Community Center of Chicago is partnering with the Ezra Habonim Niles Township Jewish Congregation to offer the Grandparents Circle program to the Chicagoland area.

The Jewish Community Center of Chicago

Families with young children and the community are invited to celebrate the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot on Saturday, October 18, from 4:00-5:30pm at “got shabbat? on Sukkot,” sponsored by the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Chicago. This free event will feature craft-making, snacks, and a performance by Chicago-based rhythmic performance ensemble, “Be the Groove.”

Children will have the opportunity to make decorations and hang them in the sukkah and experience shaking the lulav and etrog, three types of branches and one type of fruit which are held together and waved on Sukkot.

Attendees will be performing the mitzvah (good deed) of feeding the hungry by bringing a kosher non-perishable food item to donate to a local Lake County Food Pantry.

"We are excited to invite a new generation of Jewish families to join us in celebrating this ancient harvest festival. Sukkot is known as ‘as time for our rejoicing.’ During these difficult times, it is important to gather together to celebrate, through giving thanks and sharing with others,” said Patricia Nisenholz, JCC of Chicago's Early Childhood Jewish Educator.

The JCC is hosting this free event as part of a 2008 priority grant directed at Jewish community building through expanded and deeper service to the Northwest suburbs. The program is supported by the Jewish Federation Priority Grant, supported by the Fel-Pro/Mecklenburger Supporting Fund, and the Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.

Jewish Community Center Expands Adult/Child Classes to New Facility E-mail

For Immediate Release

September 8, 2008

On September 5, the JCC held an Open House to showcase its new Lakeview Adult/Child facility, located 4 blocks south of the Florence G. Heller JCC at 615 W. Wellington. JCC Adult/Child classes are educational experiences for strengthening the bond between parent and child and teaching parents what and how their child is learning.

The Wellington Open House was attended by over 75 families, many new to the JCC community. People were very excited about the new location, great space, and the idea of a conveniently-located indoor playground (especially as winter gets closer)! The children enjoyed exploring the “Heller Village” play area, which includes an art station, dramatic play area, grocery store, library, and synagogue.

Aimee Cousino’s guitar and fun children’s songs set the celebratory mood, as children ran around playing, dancing, and singing. Even when the cake was cut, the children were reluctant to pause in their enjoyment of the play facilities, costumes, and crafts!

Many families registered for classes before the Open House, and five families registered for classes at the event.

The new facility is dedicated to Adult/Child programming and specifically designed to be developmentally appropriate for the younger ages, birth to three. Seminars for parents on issues related to younger children are offered at the new site by Swellbeing®. Swellbeing® offers a range of individual consultations, discussion groups, and workshops that target a wide range of parenting problems.
