Children from the Mayer Kaplan Jewish Community Center not only celebrate Passover every year, but they get a first-hand look at what compassion and giving are all about during the holiday. Children and their extended families, teachers and other JCC members, always hold an annual seder -- singing Pesach songs, eating Jewish food and remembering the holiday commemorating the exodus and freedom of the Israelites from ancient Egypt. But over the last few years, there has been an added component of their Passover tradition at the JCC -- giving. |

Buffalo Grove Countryside - April 24, 2008
By Charles Berman When Shaw Wu and his son, Borler, saw a notice about a Me and My Dad bonding group three years ago, they didn't know it was tailored toward Jewish fathers and sons. Shaw Wu simply looked for a club where he and his 8-year-old son could spend quality time together while both could make some new friends. The Chinese-American father and son signed up, and they found what has turned out to be a perfect match through the Jewish Community Center in Buffalo Grove. |

Jewish Community Centers of Chicago (JCC) partners with synagogues in multiple ways including the Sydney N. Shure Kehilla in the city where JCC and synagogues jointly offer young adults entry into the Jewish community; Adult Jewish Education Co-op (AJEC) in the Northwest suburbs that offers learning opportunities for the entire community throughout the year; the North Shore Fellowship of Rabbis which created the Jewish Environmental Coalition of the North Shore (JECNS) which JCC’s Rabbi Nina Mizrahi co-chairs, also co-hosts Green Fairs with synagogues and works closely with local rabbis on other community educational programs and projects; “got Shabbat?” in the city and suburbs where JCC and area synagogues offer families and children the popular program on Shabbat afternoons; in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhoods where the JCC and synagogues are part of the Council of Jewish Organizations that develops community events and programs; the Cooperative Jewish Council in the Southern suburbs where JCC and area synagogues co-sponsor learning and holiday events and address political issues and community needs. |

Skin-tight tank tops and spandex bike shorts have never been standard workout attire at the heavily Orthodox Bernard Horwich Jewish Community Center in West Rogers Park. "No one would wear revealing-type clothes," said Rabbi Louis Fliegelman, who works out at the center several times a week. Nonetheless, for religious reasons some people felt uncomfortable exercising at the center -- until it became one of the few Jewish community centers in the country to open separate workout facilities for men and women. |
