Join us with your child and become familiar with the pool together. Please bring a bathing suit, swim diaper, and rubber pants for your child and towels. This class has a minimum of 5 students. Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills Children learn to put their face in the water, float on front/back (supported) and gain some independence in the water.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills Students work on water skills learned in Level 1 and begin to learn the front/back stroke. To pass level 2, your child must float and kick (front/back) on their own.
Level 3: Stroke Development The objective of Level 3 is to build on Level 2 skills through additional guided practice. Children learn front/back crawl, are introduced to elementary backstroke kick and treading water. Students also learn rules for safe diving and begin to learn how to dive. Children must be completely water safe on their front and back to join this class.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement Level 4 develops confidence in the strokes learned thus far and improves other aquatic skills. Students focus on increasing endurance through swimming familiar strokes (front/back crawls and elementary backstroke) for greater distances. New skills introduced are breaststroke and sidestroke kicks and the basics of turning at the wall.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement Level 5 focuses on the coordination and refinement of the key strokes. This level introduces the arms of breaststroke, sidestroke, butterfly kick, open turns, feet-first surface dives and fine-tuning of technique for all strokes. Children must be able to complete one length (25 yards) of front and back crawl and have passed level 4.
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency The objective of this level is to polish and perfect strokes. Swimmers are able to swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Staff introduce flip turns and the pike and tuck surface dives. The arms of the butterfly are also introduced and the complete stroke is performed. A non-stop swim of 500 yards using turns and good stroke mechanics complete this level. Junior Swim ClubDesigned for Level 5 and higher swimmers, our Junior Swim Club offers fun and motivating aerobic workouts focusing on stroke technique, endurance, strength and general fitness. This coached program incorporates stretching, various drills, fitness concepts, fun group motivation and individual attention. Games, water polo, relay races, individual swim timing and videos may be incorporated in our workouts. Goggles are recommended.
Bernard Horwich JCCBHJCC swim classes offer children the chance to learn basic swimming skills in a small class setting. We give each child individualized attention that builds confidence, enhances self–esteem and increases basic skill knowledge, allowing children to be safe and happy in and around the water. JCC swim classes utilize the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. This program is a multi-level progression, which allows for individual development. Skill levels introduce specific skills in a strategic order designed to provide children with ongoing opportunities for progress. As swimmers pass through the levels, they build on skills learned in previous levels.
