How are camp groups assigned?

Groups are based on registration and friendship requests. Our three and four year old groups may be single sex or co-ed. Parents are allowed two friendship requests and we do our best accommodate mutual requests.

What are the camper to staff ratios?

  • 5:1 for three year olds
  • 6:1 for four year olds
  • 7:1 for five year old girls
  • 6:1 for five year old boys

What is staffing in the water?

For three year old campers each swim group has no more than 7 children with 2 swim teachers (one swim staff paired with one counselor.) For four and five year old campers each swim group has no more than 10 children with 2 swim teacher (one swim staff paired with one counselor.)

In addition at least 2 American Red Cross Certified life guards safeguard the pool at all times.

What should my child wear to camp?

Please dress your child in comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. If your child swims before lunch, they can wear their swimsuit under their clothes in the morning, but please remember to send underwear with them daily.

Shoes with a closed toe and heel are best for camp activities. No sandals or Crocs are permitted, Keens are ok but are not  our preference.

What should my child bring to camp in their backpack?

  • 1 swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Plastic bag for wet clothes
  • Extra underwear and shorts
  • Lunch plus a drink
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Zip Pak attached to backpack

How do we handle inclement weather?

The Bernard Weinger JCC is air conditioned. We will move indoors for extreme heat or rain.

Can I visit my child at camp?

In order to build independence, self-confidence, and safety Apachi Village has a closed grounds policy. Parents are invited to watch campers during parent swim observation on days listed on the camp calendar. Three year old swim observation is discussed individually with parents.

What can you tell me about your staff?

Counselors are personally interviewed by the camp director and participate in a full week of staff training and development prior to the start of camp. Each group has at least one senior counselor who is a college student Unit heads are college graduates and professionals in the fields of education and or social-work and make up our administrative team.

How does carpool work for 4 and 5 year old campers?

Our efficient and organized carpool line will amaze you. It gives you the opportunity to see camp staff in action every camp day, and allows your child a smooth and comfortable transition into camp.

To make camp pick-up as efficient as possible, you will be asked to make a list of the children in your child’s afternoon carpool and submit them with your camper forms. We will assign each car or carpool a number that will be used to quickly match campers with their designated rides. All members of the carpool will receive the same number. If you do not belong to a carpool, you will still receive a number for picking up your child. Specific instructions will accompany your carpool number, which you will receive at camper/parent orientation in June.

How do I drop off my three year old?

Three year old campers are walked into the building and start their day in rooms in the Bernard Weinger JCC. Parents drop campers off at their classroom door where they are greeted warmly by one of their counselors.

Does my child need to be toilet trained to attend Apachi Village?

All 4 and 5 year old campers must be toilet trained by the time camp begins.  For 3 year-olds we have two separate camp programs one for campers who are and one for campers who are not toilet trained. The camp program for non-toilet trained 3 year-olds is run in cooperation with JCC Early Childhood. Campers in this program do not swim.
