Janet Stern Book Group Janet Stern, one of the North Shore’s most engaging discussion leaders, takes an in-depth look at various books. Although many in the group have been loyal followers for over 38 years, newcomers are always welcome. Ask the Rabbi Gain a better understanding of the Torah and its teachings. Rabbi Scheiman answers your questions, no matter how complex or simple. Concerns Led by Sarah Friedman, this group shares views on subjects ranging from politics and medicine to personal dilemmas. Enjoy coffee, cookies, humor and the company of old and new friends. Contemporary Journalists Journalists writing in the New Yorker, The Forward, Midstream, the Atlantic Monthly and New York Times define what is happening in the world and influence how we are affected by these events. Through active discussion the class offers insights and understanding of today’s local and world headlines. Current Events Are you an avid follower of world events, or wish you were? Class leader June Michaelson guides you through weekly discussions of current politics and world affairs. Drawing & Painting Students work with a variety of mediums to create their own unique masterpiece. Art instructor Leslie Hirshfield gives beginners recommendations for purchasing the right supplies. Expanding Horizons Each week guest speakers provide interesting programs on a wide range of topics that expand your knowledge and enrich your world. Folk Dance Sylvia Litwin leads this weekly group. The only requirement is the desire to have fun and get a little exercise. Partners are not necessary. Great Composers Get to know different composers each week through videos and witty presentations by teacher Joe Cunniff. Kiddish Enjoy challah, wine or grape juice and Shabbat ambiance with your JCC friends. Music Appreciation Professional pianist Jerry Rizzer performs classical pieces each week, explains the construction of the music and demonstrates how various composers have influenced each other. Tai Chi Movement & FunThe practice of Tai Chi creates balance, flexibility and calm in your life. Instructor Hal Katz helps you become relaxed and stress free. Talmud Instructor Zev Drutman uses the Talmud to analyze topics of concern in Judaism. Class members call this class very enlightening and challenging. The World Today Volunteer Sidney Berger keeps members up to date on issues of importance to senior citizens. The group discusses positive ways for people to take action and make changes on their own behalf. Yiddish Musical Memories Have a freilich time listening to your old Yiddish favorites provided by volunteer Jack Cossid. Enjoy his extensive Yiddish audio collections, rare selections and classic songs. Older AdultsThe Heller JCC’s Older Adult program is held at Temple Sholom during the daytime. Offerings include an Open University with classes that meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Subjects one might find are American history, current events, art history and book reviews to name a few. JCC membership and a class registration fee are required. On Tuesdays and Fridays our Movement classes focus on improved breathing capacity, strength and flexibility. The instructor is trained in working with older adults to assure participants’ well being. A $5 fee is asked, pay as you go. Wednesdays are often devoted to day trips to destinations such as museums, theaters, concerts, etc. Fees for the day trips cover the cost of transportation, tickets or docents. Monday mornings find our men’s club involved in a lively discussion of some current issue or article. A spirit of good fellowship is readily apparent.There is no fee to attend each week other than JCC membership. An out-of-town trip program to destinations such as Cuba, Alaska, Branson or Las Vegas is also offered. A JCC staff person is present on the trips for your convenience. Instructor: Rick Holbrook Jewish Short StoriesThe Jewish Short Story class is peer-led, with the class selecting the reading material. Each week, the class discusses a different short story. LiteratureThe Literature class revolves around Shakespeare in a variety of ways. Instructor: David Zesmer MusicThe class learns to improve its listening skills through simple analysis of masterpieces and the creative use of various instruments. Instructor: Renee’ Lubell Senior ConnectionsSenior Connections offers people an opportunity to discuss new life situations with a professional and peers. Everyday situations are examined and helpful courses of action are offered. Adult Day Trips Day long trips including docent guided visits to museums, estates, theater, etc. July 17 (Thursday): Botanical Garden Coach bus departs Temple Anshe Sholom at 9:00 am. The day includes deluxe coach bus ride, guided tour, tram ride and a box lunch. July 31 (Thursday): Roots of Reform Meet at 9:40 am at 200 S Michigan, home of the Chicago Architectural Foundation, to board the bus for this 10:00am tour. Learn about the men and women who contributed to this growing city from 1871 to 1920, and visit the homes, synagogues, churches and parks that played in their lives. After the tour we will walk over to the Gage Restaurant for a dutch treat lunch. The Adult Learning Exchange (T.A.L.E.) This is an Institute for Learning in Retirement, a partnership between the Anita M. Stone JCC, Governors State University and Prairie State College, affiliated with the Elderhostel Institute Network. Classes meet on Fridays for 8 week sessions. They are peer-led and there are no grades. New Adult SchoolTorah Study with Rabbi Michael Myers Computer Learning ExchangeThe Anita M. Stone Computer Learning Exchange Lab has 10 individual workstations with Hewlett Packard PC's and 17-inch flat screen monitors, 2 laptop stations, color laser printers, scanners, CD/DVD burning capabilities and a SMART board. Adult courses range from beginning Computer Fundamentals and Introduction to Computers to advanced Word Processing and Digital Photography as well as workshops on Computer Maintenance and Digital Music.
